6-A-side Action hits Nairobi this weekend

I am still trying to get full details for the fixtures for this, but it will be all hard and fast action in Nairobi this weekend with the SCLPS SIX-A-SIDE tournament taking centre stage.

Kanbis A will no doubt go into the event as one of the favourites, but expect stiff competition from the likes of Stray Lions and Swamibapa as well. This is also a great opportunity for some of the lower ranked teams who have one or two star players who normally get swallowed up in the 11 a side format.

So far I'm aware of the following fixtures:
* SCLPS SIX-A-SIDE - KANBIS "B" VS SCLPS "B"
SCLPS GROUND
Saturday, May 30 at 2:00pm
* SCLPS SIX-A-SIDE-NGARA VS KANBIS "B"
NGARA SPORTS CLUB
Saturday, May 30 at 3:30pm
* SCLPS SIX-A-SIDE - BHAVSINHJI "B" VS STRAY LIONS "B"
SCLPS GROUND
Saturday, May 30 at 4:15pm
* SCLPS SIX-A-SIDE - KANBIS "A" VS BHAVSINHJI "A"
SCLPS GROUND
Saturday, May 30 at 5:00pm

More details will be updated as they become available...

Overseas Players, Amit Bhudia and the IC Cup/Shield.

So this news isnt exactly the freshest, but a few overseas players, Seren Waters, Ragheb Aga and Abeed Janmohamed have put in some promising performances for their respective clubs in the past month.

Waters, turning out for the Weybridge Cricket Club (captained by former Kenya International, Abeed Janmohamed) in The Surrey Championship top scored with 91 in his teams narrow round 2 victory over the Spencer Cricket Club. Waters has also been playing for the Surrey 2nd XI and also their Academy. He has made a few promising starts for both the 2nd XI and the Academy, including a 77 not out for the Academy in their 10 wicket win over Normandy CC.

Janmohamed himself contributed 47 in Weybridge's round 1 loss to Sutton Cricket Club

Meanwhile, Ragheb Aga turning out for the Eastbourne Cricket Club when not on County Duties for Sussex, bowled a devastating spell in his sides 10 wicket win over Haywards Heath. Aga got 3 of the first 4 wickets to fall in the innings, before returning to clean up the Haywards Heath tail to finish with the excellent figures of 7/28 off 12.4 overs. Hopefully with more performances like this, Ragheb will make his way back into Sussex's first XI.

James Clegg, (Im not entirely sure if Clegg still desires to play for Kenya) started of his season for Fairburn Cricket with a cracking century, making 107 in his teams win over Darton Cricket Club. The Darton side featured England Womans player, Sarah Taylor.

It appears Amit Bhudia has overcome a shoulder injury. Turning out for Mombasa Sports Club against touring English Outfit Lisvane Cricket Club. Bhudia made 104 in his teams total of 258/8 off 35 overs, his innings included a massive 9 sixes. Mombasa went onto win the match which according to all reports, was played in very good spirit.

The Intercontinental Cup is set to resume soon with 11 teams now paticipating in two seperate divisions 'The ICC Intercontinental Cup' and 'The ICC Intercontinental Shield'. Kenya will be competeing in the ICC Intercontinental Cup Division which also features Ireland, Netherlands, Scotland, Afghanistan, Canada and a representative side from Zimbabwe. One team it doesnt feature, is last years runners up, Namibia who have been relegated due to their recent performance at the World Cup Qualifiers. As a result of this, Namibia will be featuring in the Shield competiton alongside Bermuda, UAE and Uganda. One feels this is a poor decision by the ICC to demote a team that were runners up in a 4 day tournament because of their performance in a 50 over tournament. To rub salt into the wound, the USA have been included in the World Twenty20 Qualifiers to take place in the United Arab Emirates in October ahead of Namibia. This event will also feature the top 6 associates/affiliates Ireland, Canada, Netherlands, Kenya, Scotland, Afghanistan and host nation UAE.

The Intercontinental Cup and Shield competitions will feature prizemoney for the first time. The winners of the Cup division to receive US$100,000 and the runners up US$40,000. In the Shield division division the winners will take home US$25,000 and the runners up US$10,000. An outright win in either division will be worth US$3,000.

Finally, thank you to Nick for inviting me to contribute to his blog. Hopefully my first attempt wasnt too shabby.

Upgrading the grounds, what about the players

Good to see (report in today's nation) that Cricket Kenya are in the process of upgrading several grounds in Mombasa, Nairobi and Nakuru in preparation for the U19 WC next year. All well and good, when the cream of the World's upcoming cricketers come to Kenya, they will be met with good pitches and will be able to play at the top of their game. Excellent. what happens when they come up against our lads?

It is absolutely vital that CK give a proper preparation to the U19 team otherwise we are going to get absolutely demolished by the likes of Australia and India. Not least is the need for the team to play together consistently and build up their skills as a unit. No word has yet been forthcoming on whether the elite Leagues will run this year, but if so, it must be strongly considered for the U19 team to feature as an entity in itself. CK should also consider a tour to a Full member with a stint at one of their Academies (thank Ben for that idea!). Without a decent preparation, our boys will suffer big time and that will be neither fair to them nor to Kenyan cricket.

Stray Lions take 40 over title

Stray Lions upset the highly fancied Kanbis over the weekend to take the 40-overs Ashnil Hotels Cricket Trophy. Bringing together six of the top teams in Nairobi, this event is a great indication of what can be achieved when people pull in the right direction. Not only did it bring together many of the top cricketers, but also featured in both main dailies as David Obuya won a new motorbike for being named man of the series after amassing 380 runs.

Congratulations to the Stray Lions team who's star continues to rise as they rapidly confirm themselves as one of the strongest teams in Kenyan domestic cricket.

In other news, the U19s managed to defend another sub 100 score to defeat Tanzania, but then lost to Uganda. Paul Anjere impressed in both games taking 3/2 and 3/14. Our last match today is against Namibia who have so far looked like the team to beat. This has been a very poor tournament from a Kenyan perspective and perhaps the only good thing that may come from it is if it gives Cricket Kenya a kick up the backside to do something with regards to development.
