Maurice Ouma is the 2009 Kenyacricket.com Player of the Year

This year Kenya cricket.com reintroduced the Player of the Year award bringing in a much larger panel of judges to select Kenya's most consistent high achiever over the last 12 months.

There are 2 panels (Players & Journalists) plus a Fan poll. Each panel has 5 judges on it.

How the panels work is that after each International match, each panelist awards 3 points to the player they think performed the best, 2 points to the next best performer and 1 point for the 3rd best performer for Kenya in that match.

Fan points are allocated the same way, but based on an online poll.

After each game, the total points for each panel are tallied and the highest points total for that panel gets awarded 3 points, the second highest 2 points and the 3rd highest 1 point. These are referred to as Aggeragate Points.

The total aggeragate points from each panel plus the fan poll (3,2,1 as well) are then totalled and again the highest scoring player is awarded 3 points, the next highest 2 and the third highest 1 point for the match - known as Match Points.

By using this system, at the end of each game 3 players come out with Match Points that then go towards the end of year tally. The player with the most points at the end of the year in the Player of the Year.

Using the several levels of tallying helps remove personal bias and rewards the best and most deserving players for that match.

Please note that not all panelists were available for all matches, but we have strived to adhere to this system as much as possible.

This year, possibly because of the extra panelists, it has been the closest ever decision. In the end only 1.5 points split the top 4 performers with new captain, Maurice Ouma (pictured v Ireland in the Intercontinental Cup), narrowly edging out Steve Tikolo and Jimmy Kamande to take the award. Past winners include Steve Tikolo (2006) and Thomas Odoyo (2007). There was no award in 2008.

Congratulations to Maurice on being chosen as Kenya Cricket.com Player of the Year 2009 and to all the players who made this such a close competition.

As Maurice sits on the players panel, I thought it would be a good idea to go back and see what the result would have been if his points were not included. Had this happened, he would actually have won by a clearer margin of 2 points rather than 0.5!

My thanks to all the panelists for 2009 - I hope we can count on your input again in 2010 and to thanks also to all the fans who voted online. Hopefully we will have a much more streamlined process for this next year.

Kenya Cricket 2009 - year in review

My analysis of 2009 can be read here on Cricket Europe. Below is a brief timeline of what went on in the way of Kenyan cricket over the last year. Some highs, some definite lows, but on the whole there was more activity than in 2008, especially at the youth and development levels and this can only be a good thing for the future.

January:

  • A Kenya XI beat Uganda 2-1 in a friendly series.
  • Zimbabwe whitewash Kenya 5-0 at home

February:

  • A pay dispute between umpires and the NPCA mars the 20-20 competition.

March:

  • Cricket Kenya elections see Samir Inamdar and his team elected for a further 4 year term.
  • CK appoint a new administration and development team on a full time basis.
  • Groundwork gets underway on venues for the U19WC – somewhat ironic as
  • ICC insiders say this was when the decision to strip Kenya of U19WC hosting rights was actually made.

April:

  • World Cup Qualifiers. Kenya lose to the Netherlands before a run of wins over UAE, Afghanistan and Bermuda put them into the Super 8s where
  • Losses to Canada and Namibia jeopardise qualification, but Kenya scrape into 4th spot with wins over Scotland and a weakened Ireland.
  • Steve Tikolo resigns as captain of the national team.
  • Andy Kirsten’s contract is not renewed after lacklustre performances under his guidance.
  • Kenya send an under strength side to the U19 WC Africa qualifiers. A dismal performance sees Kenya finish outside the top 2 who get automatic qualification. Kenya should still qualify as hosts but the ICC are waiting in the wings.

May:

  • Stray Lions A beat Kanbis A to take the Ashnil Hotels 40 over competition.
  • Swamibapa A win the NPCA 6-a-side knockout tournament
  • Cricket Kenya start the search for new captain and coach.

June:

  • Coast Cricket Association launch their website. It stutters throughout the year with occasional updates interspersed with long periods of inactivity – a mirror perhaps of action at the coast?
  • Nakuru hosts the U13 regional tournament. Kenya lose out to Uganda and the rain which sees Uganda beat Tanzania in the final.
  • Kisumu win the RVCA Woolmatt League.
  • Maurice Ouma is named Kenya's new captain with Jimmy Kamande named as deputy.
  • The ICC unfairly strip Kenya of hosting rights for the U19 World Cup – a matter handled almost as badly by CK as by the ICC, who according to insiders had been looking for an excuse to do this since March.

July:

  • Kenya fight hard to hold onto a draw in their Intercontinental Cup match against Ireland.
  • Ireland win the following ODI series 3-0 thanks in part to Duckworth-Lewis.
  • Kenya Cricket.com relaunches the Player of the Year Award
  • The NPCA League starts
  • CK register all U19 players – why this was not done before the qualifiers is unclear.
  • CK hold a secondary girls schools tournament won by Moi Girls School Nairobi, the defending champions.
  • David ‘Maji’ Waters is named an MBE for his services to Kenyan cricket.
  • CK finally respond to the U19 World Cup being moved – too little too late for most fans.

August:

  • NPCA League continues – Duncan Allen hits the first double century of the season.
  • Maurice Obumbe returns to playing cricket amid much fanfare in the local press – results however take longer and are no better than the up and coming players much maligned by his supporters.
  • CK organise regional schools tournaments, Menengai Primary win in Rift Valley, Karura forest win in Nairobi.
  • CK host U17 trials for the team for the regional finals which Kenya duly win in style.
  • Kenya smash Canada in the Intercontinental Cup but lose the rain affected ODI series 1-0.
  • Kenya Ladies record their first ever win in the NPCA League beating Oshwal XI in their Div III match.

September:

  • CK appoint Eldine Baptiste as Kenya’s new coach – he promises to restore Kenya to its rightful position as top Associate and vows that there will be no free rides in his teams.
  • RVCA release their development program which is licked off with over 100 teachers in Nakuru and Kericho being trained on the basics of teaching the game.
  • Kenya are drawn in group A for the 2011 WC along with Australia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Zimbabwe and Canada.
  • CK announce plans to hold a media challenge to improve press relations.
  • Banda School win the Peponi 10-10 tournament retaining the title they won last year.

October:

  • Kenya tour Zimbabwe losing an Intercontinental Cup match they should have won and
  • Getting hammered 4-1 in an ODI series in which at least 2 more games were there for the taking. Seren Waters’ absence due to university was certainly noticed.
  • Danish side Dansk tours Mombasa giving valuable match practice to the CCA sides who emerge victorious from all games.
  • RVCA Crown Berger 20-20 League starts.
  • Article in the local press highlights the development work being done in Laikipia to introduce the Maasai to cricket.

November:

  • NPCA League goes down to the wire with Swamibapa A finally breaking the Kanbis stranglehold on the competition.
  • Simba Union are relegated from the Super division with Nookers A promoted. Nbi Gymkhana are relegated to Div II while Stray Lions B are promoted to Div I, Quitbis are relegated from Div II while Parklands are promoted from Div III.
  • Mombasa Jafferies play host to a series of community and junior development games.
  • NPCA Bags and Balers 40-over knockout starts.
  • Cricket Without Boundaries arrive in Kenya and promise to double their visits from 2010 onwards.
  • Kenya Ladies Juniors lose out to Tanzania and Uganda in the regional championships.

December:

  • CK hold U17 Leagues in all 3 provinces. Nbi Gymkhana take the NPCA title, Coast Tuskers take the coast title, no word from Rift Valley however.
  • SCLPSYL hold the first ever Day-Night match in Kenya followed by a community tournament.
  • Kenya’s remaining Intercontinental Cup matches are released by the ICC.
  • Uganda visit Kenya for a 20-20 series which they win 2-0 and
  • An ODI series in which Kenya emphatically turn the tables 3-0.
  • Kenya Ladies become our second Continental Champions beating both Tanzania and Uganda twice to break an 8-year drought.
  • Tom Tikolo resigns over misappropriation of funds ending the year on a sour note for Kenyan cricket.

Cubs and Swamibapa win in Nakuru

PBH Royal cubs took on Melvins in Game 11 of the Crown Berger 20-20 Tournament in Nakuru and gave their opponents all sorts of difficulty. Melvins batting first lost regular and cheap wickets yet still managed to reach 118/8 in their 20 overs thanks mainly to a solo effort by Saad (?) who made 40 and the Cubs bowlers who gave away a huge 41 extras. Only one other Melvins batsman made it to double figures.

Wickets for the Royal Cubs were shared around with Bilal ? (1/9), Raj ? (1/12) Jaymin ? (2/19), Harshil ? (1/10), and Divyang ? (1/15) all contributing to the cause.

Cubs reply got off to a shaky start with both openers falling cheaply but then Bilal (41) and Divyang (45*) combined to steer their side to an easy win. Cubs finished on 124/4 with 6 overs still remaining. Pick of Mevins bowlers was Patshi ? who picked up 2 wickets.

In game 12, Swamibapa won the toss and opted to bat against Spinknit. Anil ?, Swamibapa's opener carried hie bat for the innings with a wonderful 67 and combined with 44 from number 3, Jogesh ? a huge total looked on the cards. As it was, Spinknit fought back with a flurry of late wickets, but Anil remained to the end and Swamibapa finished on an imposing 149/6.

Spinknit never looked in the game against the tight bowling ofscrews, they folded to 107 all out.
