Scarecrow and Swamibapa start 2010 with wins

Having lost 2 games last weekend - one to rain, the other to a funeral, action returned to the pitch yesterday in Nakuru with both Scarecrow and Swamibapa registering their first wins of 2010.

Scarecrow defeated Royal Cubs by 32 runs in the 14th match of the RVSC Crown Berger 20-20 League thanks to a superb unbeaten 90 from Armadeep (?) and a depleted Cubs side. Armadeep found good support in Faiz (?) who added 37 as Scarecrow eased to 182/3 in their 20 overs.

Royal Cubs hit an early hurdle with the loss of Krunal for just 3, but a good second wicket stand between Trushit ? (30) and Sunny ? (68) gave them a glimpse of victory before Prabdeep ? (3/29) ripped through the middle order. In the end the chase fell well short, but could have looked better had Royal Cubs been able to field a full team.

This begs the question as to what exactly the RVCA development program is doing as one would have thought that there would be plenty of local school boys who would be itching to make up the numbers. It is just such scenarios (and the spinknit forfeight last week) where the association needs to step in and give these younsters a chance. At worst, they would certainly allow a proper game to be played and at best could really make a name for themselves if they took the opportunity. This must be serious food for thought for RVCA for future matches. There is no point in having a development program if local players are not filtered into the league teams.

In Game 16, Swamibapa batted first against Khalsa XI but found the going difficult against the tight lines of Indraj ? (4/24) and Vikas (3/21). Top scorers were Kalpesh Patel (24) and Jogesh Patel (19) with Sunil Rathod (18) and Deval Patel (16) also contributing to the final tally of 120 all out.

If Swamibapa had struggled against the bowling, Khalsa really made a meal of it as their reply stuttered to just 94 all out. V.P Singh was the lone figure of resistance as he was left stranded on 36* as only two other players made it into double figures. Jogesh Patel (3/23) was pick of the Swamibapa bowling with Jignesh Patel (2/10), Dilp Patel (2/10) and Anil Patel (2/18) also enjoying their time with the ball.

Cubs and Swamibapa win in Nakuru

PBH Royal cubs took on Melvins in Game 11 of the Crown Berger 20-20 Tournament in Nakuru and gave their opponents all sorts of difficulty. Melvins batting first lost regular and cheap wickets yet still managed to reach 118/8 in their 20 overs thanks mainly to a solo effort by Saad (?) who made 40 and the Cubs bowlers who gave away a huge 41 extras. Only one other Melvins batsman made it to double figures.

Wickets for the Royal Cubs were shared around with Bilal ? (1/9), Raj ? (1/12) Jaymin ? (2/19), Harshil ? (1/10), and Divyang ? (1/15) all contributing to the cause.

Cubs reply got off to a shaky start with both openers falling cheaply but then Bilal (41) and Divyang (45*) combined to steer their side to an easy win. Cubs finished on 124/4 with 6 overs still remaining. Pick of Mevins bowlers was Patshi ? who picked up 2 wickets.

In game 12, Swamibapa won the toss and opted to bat against Spinknit. Anil ?, Swamibapa's opener carried hie bat for the innings with a wonderful 67 and combined with 44 from number 3, Jogesh ? a huge total looked on the cards. As it was, Spinknit fought back with a flurry of late wickets, but Anil remained to the end and Swamibapa finished on an imposing 149/6.

Spinknit never looked in the game against the tight bowling ofscrews, they folded to 107 all out.

RVSC and Spinknit win in Crown Berger 20-20 matches

RVSC defeated Khalsa XI and Spinknit accounted for PBH Royal Cubs in the weekend games in the RVCA Crown Berger 20-20 tournament over the weekend.

In Game 5, Khalsa XI won the toss and elected to field with their top order all getting decent starts. Gunnaskekaran (37) and Nilesh Mehta (16) set the early tempo with Kulveer Ruprai (37*) and V.P. Singh (28) looking to consolidate. RVSC stuck to their guns however and the removal of Singh and Khalsa's efforts to up the run rate resulted in a spurt of wickets to see them close on 142/5 after their 20 overs. Pick of the bowling for RVSC was Rahul ? (2/25)

the RVSC reply was lead from the beginning by the in-form Luke Nightingale who steered his side to victory with an unbeaten 73. Chris Sterling contributed 23, but Khalsa will rue the 20 extra's that was third highest scorer as RVSC got home with 6 wickets and 2.4 overs in hand.

Game 6 saw spinknit bat first after winning the toss and setting an impressive 170/7 in their allotted overs. Minesh Bhatt retired after scoring 60 and a late flourish from Jatin Patel (31) did the damage. Jaymin Patel picked up 3/36 for the Cubs with Raj Patel and Ravi Patel taking one each.

PBH in reply had little answer to the spinknit bowlers with all who were used taking wickets. Indravadan Patel (2/6), Ahmed ? (2/7) and D.K ?? (2/10) the main destroyers. In the end a comfortable win for spinknit as the PBH Royal Cubs innings folded for just 68.

RVCA Crown Berger 20-20 Roundup

Game 3 saw Scarecrow take on Melvin Jones in the morning game at RVSC.

Melvins won the toss and elected to bat but struggled against the new ball attack of Scarecrow with Prabdeep (?) ripping through the top order to take 4/15 off his 4 overs. Jayendra Patel (19) was the only Melvin's batsman to reach double figures as Faiz (?) 2/18 and Girish (?) 2/7 also got into the act to have Melvins all back in the pavillion after 17.3 overs with just 74 on the board.

It should always have been an easy run chase for Scarecrow and Melvins needed to bowl a tight line if they were to stay in the match. In fact the opposite happened and while wickets did fall, the extras piled up - 24 in all and Scarecrow romped to victory with 5 wickets and 8 overs to spare.

Game 4 saw P.B.H.Royal Cubs take on Rift Valley Sports Club in what proved to be an absolute thriller. Winning the toss PHB elected to bat and posted 173 thanks to 2 batsmen. Divyang Patel played an anchoring role from the middle order with an unbeaten 49, but it was the fireworks from Bilal ? (pictured) that really set the ground alight. He plundered a thundering 70 off just 16 balls dealing exclusively in boundaries and without slogging. Runs came from all areas of the ground and he played genuine cricket strokes to make them. Though he was eventually bowled by Chris Sterling, he had effectively set his team up for a good defence. For their part, the RVSC bowlers stuck to their guns with Luke Nightingale once again the pick taking 4/27. Sahil ? (2/36) and Dalveer ? (2/40) the other bowlers to pick up wickets.

RVSC's reply looked to be in good hands with Ed Bolderstone (35) and Luke Nightingale (65*) setting up the platform at the beggining of the innings and Chris Sterling (37) taking them closer to victory. Wickets then fell rapidly as they tried to get over the line with 3 run outs eventually costing them a 1 run defeat. A fantastic result from PBH and Bilal will no doubt be the toast of the team with his innings, but RVSC will rue the one that got away.

Khalsa XI and RVSC take first blood in Crown Berger 20-20

Khalsa XI and Rift Valley Sports Club (right) started their RVCA Crown Berger 20-20 campaigns with convincing wins over the weekend.

Khalsa took on Melvins in he first game of the tournament and looked in control right from the start. Winning the toss, they opted to bat and put on an imposing 218/3 with all of their batsmen getting starts. Guniskar ? (30) and Nilesh Meta (29) laid the foundation before Kulveer ?(63) and Hassan ? (64*) put the foot down to leave them firmly in control going into the break.

Chasing such a big target, Melvins needed quick runs but instead lost both quick and regular wickets as the struggled to come to grips with the Khalsa bowling. Maulik ? (29) and Bhavesh ? (24) were the only batsmen to get into double figures as Guniskar completed a fine all round performance taking 5/24 while Vikash ? finished with figures of 3/12. Melvins were all out for 91 giving Khalsa a thumping 127 run win to start their season.

In the second game of the tournament, also played at the RVSC ground, the home side were simply too good for Swamibapa who only managed 99 batting first after winning the toss. The mysteriously named D.K was the best of Swamibapa's batsmen with 33 with the next highest score a mere 13. Sahil ? (3/7), Sterling ? (2/18) and Arfan ? (2/24) doing the bulk of the damage with the ball.

RVSC's reply never looked in doubt with Rahul ? (31*) and Luke (Nightingale?) (62*) easing the home side to victory without losing a wicket.
