Scarecrow and Swamibapa start 2010 with wins

Having lost 2 games last weekend - one to rain, the other to a funeral, action returned to the pitch yesterday in Nakuru with both Scarecrow and Swamibapa registering their first wins of 2010.

Scarecrow defeated Royal Cubs by 32 runs in the 14th match of the RVSC Crown Berger 20-20 League thanks to a superb unbeaten 90 from Armadeep (?) and a depleted Cubs side. Armadeep found good support in Faiz (?) who added 37 as Scarecrow eased to 182/3 in their 20 overs.

Royal Cubs hit an early hurdle with the loss of Krunal for just 3, but a good second wicket stand between Trushit ? (30) and Sunny ? (68) gave them a glimpse of victory before Prabdeep ? (3/29) ripped through the middle order. In the end the chase fell well short, but could have looked better had Royal Cubs been able to field a full team.

This begs the question as to what exactly the RVCA development program is doing as one would have thought that there would be plenty of local school boys who would be itching to make up the numbers. It is just such scenarios (and the spinknit forfeight last week) where the association needs to step in and give these younsters a chance. At worst, they would certainly allow a proper game to be played and at best could really make a name for themselves if they took the opportunity. This must be serious food for thought for RVCA for future matches. There is no point in having a development program if local players are not filtered into the league teams.

In Game 16, Swamibapa batted first against Khalsa XI but found the going difficult against the tight lines of Indraj ? (4/24) and Vikas (3/21). Top scorers were Kalpesh Patel (24) and Jogesh Patel (19) with Sunil Rathod (18) and Deval Patel (16) also contributing to the final tally of 120 all out.

If Swamibapa had struggled against the bowling, Khalsa really made a meal of it as their reply stuttered to just 94 all out. V.P Singh was the lone figure of resistance as he was left stranded on 36* as only two other players made it into double figures. Jogesh Patel (3/23) was pick of the Swamibapa bowling with Jignesh Patel (2/10), Dilp Patel (2/10) and Anil Patel (2/18) also enjoying their time with the ball.

Cubs and Swamibapa win in Nakuru

PBH Royal cubs took on Melvins in Game 11 of the Crown Berger 20-20 Tournament in Nakuru and gave their opponents all sorts of difficulty. Melvins batting first lost regular and cheap wickets yet still managed to reach 118/8 in their 20 overs thanks mainly to a solo effort by Saad (?) who made 40 and the Cubs bowlers who gave away a huge 41 extras. Only one other Melvins batsman made it to double figures.

Wickets for the Royal Cubs were shared around with Bilal ? (1/9), Raj ? (1/12) Jaymin ? (2/19), Harshil ? (1/10), and Divyang ? (1/15) all contributing to the cause.

Cubs reply got off to a shaky start with both openers falling cheaply but then Bilal (41) and Divyang (45*) combined to steer their side to an easy win. Cubs finished on 124/4 with 6 overs still remaining. Pick of Mevins bowlers was Patshi ? who picked up 2 wickets.

In game 12, Swamibapa won the toss and opted to bat against Spinknit. Anil ?, Swamibapa's opener carried hie bat for the innings with a wonderful 67 and combined with 44 from number 3, Jogesh ? a huge total looked on the cards. As it was, Spinknit fought back with a flurry of late wickets, but Anil remained to the end and Swamibapa finished on an imposing 149/6.

Spinknit never looked in the game against the tight bowling ofscrews, they folded to 107 all out.

Cricket Without Boundaries to double visits to Kenya

Cricket Without Boundaries group has arrived from U.K.. After arrival, they first camped at Kericho Teachers Training College where they gave training to an 82 strong new Teacher Group!

On Thursday they moved to Nakuru Teachers Traning college in Sagana, where they gave basic training to 55 new Teachers!

Training the teachers means that the skills they learn will then be able to be passed on to hundreds of children at local schools further spreading the game and the awareness of AIDS prevention.

More good news is that rather then coming once a year as they have done in the past, they will now come twice a year with the next camp already Scheduled for April 2010. Hopefully this great initiative will also team up with the project at Laikipia as both could surely benefit from the other.

Friday saw the first day of level nought, one and two training at RVSC and a special mention should be. An especial mention should be made of Melvins School who encouraged both the boys and girls to take part in big numbers in the above categories of training.

Great to see this initiative gaining strength with every year and every visit. Hopefully RVCA will be publishing some photos of the coaching sessions soon!

RVSC and Spinknit win in Crown Berger 20-20 matches

RVSC defeated Khalsa XI and Spinknit accounted for PBH Royal Cubs in the weekend games in the RVCA Crown Berger 20-20 tournament over the weekend.

In Game 5, Khalsa XI won the toss and elected to field with their top order all getting decent starts. Gunnaskekaran (37) and Nilesh Mehta (16) set the early tempo with Kulveer Ruprai (37*) and V.P. Singh (28) looking to consolidate. RVSC stuck to their guns however and the removal of Singh and Khalsa's efforts to up the run rate resulted in a spurt of wickets to see them close on 142/5 after their 20 overs. Pick of the bowling for RVSC was Rahul ? (2/25)

the RVSC reply was lead from the beginning by the in-form Luke Nightingale who steered his side to victory with an unbeaten 73. Chris Sterling contributed 23, but Khalsa will rue the 20 extra's that was third highest scorer as RVSC got home with 6 wickets and 2.4 overs in hand.

Game 6 saw spinknit bat first after winning the toss and setting an impressive 170/7 in their allotted overs. Minesh Bhatt retired after scoring 60 and a late flourish from Jatin Patel (31) did the damage. Jaymin Patel picked up 3/36 for the Cubs with Raj Patel and Ravi Patel taking one each.

PBH in reply had little answer to the spinknit bowlers with all who were used taking wickets. Indravadan Patel (2/6), Ahmed ? (2/7) and D.K ?? (2/10) the main destroyers. In the end a comfortable win for spinknit as the PBH Royal Cubs innings folded for just 68.

RVCA Crown Berger 20-20 Roundup

Game 3 saw Scarecrow take on Melvin Jones in the morning game at RVSC.

Melvins won the toss and elected to bat but struggled against the new ball attack of Scarecrow with Prabdeep (?) ripping through the top order to take 4/15 off his 4 overs. Jayendra Patel (19) was the only Melvin's batsman to reach double figures as Faiz (?) 2/18 and Girish (?) 2/7 also got into the act to have Melvins all back in the pavillion after 17.3 overs with just 74 on the board.

It should always have been an easy run chase for Scarecrow and Melvins needed to bowl a tight line if they were to stay in the match. In fact the opposite happened and while wickets did fall, the extras piled up - 24 in all and Scarecrow romped to victory with 5 wickets and 8 overs to spare.

Game 4 saw P.B.H.Royal Cubs take on Rift Valley Sports Club in what proved to be an absolute thriller. Winning the toss PHB elected to bat and posted 173 thanks to 2 batsmen. Divyang Patel played an anchoring role from the middle order with an unbeaten 49, but it was the fireworks from Bilal ? (pictured) that really set the ground alight. He plundered a thundering 70 off just 16 balls dealing exclusively in boundaries and without slogging. Runs came from all areas of the ground and he played genuine cricket strokes to make them. Though he was eventually bowled by Chris Sterling, he had effectively set his team up for a good defence. For their part, the RVSC bowlers stuck to their guns with Luke Nightingale once again the pick taking 4/27. Sahil ? (2/36) and Dalveer ? (2/40) the other bowlers to pick up wickets.

RVSC's reply looked to be in good hands with Ed Bolderstone (35) and Luke Nightingale (65*) setting up the platform at the beggining of the innings and Chris Sterling (37) taking them closer to victory. Wickets then fell rapidly as they tried to get over the line with 3 run outs eventually costing them a 1 run defeat. A fantastic result from PBH and Bilal will no doubt be the toast of the team with his innings, but RVSC will rue the one that got away.

Khalsa XI and RVSC take first blood in Crown Berger 20-20

Khalsa XI and Rift Valley Sports Club (right) started their RVCA Crown Berger 20-20 campaigns with convincing wins over the weekend.

Khalsa took on Melvins in he first game of the tournament and looked in control right from the start. Winning the toss, they opted to bat and put on an imposing 218/3 with all of their batsmen getting starts. Guniskar ? (30) and Nilesh Meta (29) laid the foundation before Kulveer ?(63) and Hassan ? (64*) put the foot down to leave them firmly in control going into the break.

Chasing such a big target, Melvins needed quick runs but instead lost both quick and regular wickets as the struggled to come to grips with the Khalsa bowling. Maulik ? (29) and Bhavesh ? (24) were the only batsmen to get into double figures as Guniskar completed a fine all round performance taking 5/24 while Vikash ? finished with figures of 3/12. Melvins were all out for 91 giving Khalsa a thumping 127 run win to start their season.

In the second game of the tournament, also played at the RVSC ground, the home side were simply too good for Swamibapa who only managed 99 batting first after winning the toss. The mysteriously named D.K was the best of Swamibapa's batsmen with 33 with the next highest score a mere 13. Sahil ? (3/7), Sterling ? (2/18) and Arfan ? (2/24) doing the bulk of the damage with the ball.

RVSC's reply never looked in doubt with Rahul ? (31*) and Luke (Nightingale?) (62*) easing the home side to victory without losing a wicket.

If any Rift Players read this, please note the number of players recorded in the scorecards and hence reports without their full names. Please try to encourage the scorers to include these as it makes it much easier for the rest of us to follow who has done what.

Menengai Primary win Cricket Kenya Rift Valley Junior Tournament

Menengai Primary School defeated Nakuru Day by 1 run to win the Cricket Kenya Rift Valley Province Junior Cricket tournament played at Nakuru Athletics Club. Menengai scored 61 runs for eight wickets -the target that favorites Nakuru failed to reach. The side needed eight runs in the last over with three wickets in hand failed to do that as Gideon Kipmgeno picked two wickets and forced a run out before Fanuel failed to score two runs of the last ball.
Yusuf Mwangi and George Owino top scored for Menengai with 18 and 16 runs respectively with Hussein Mohammed picking two wickets in the innings.

However, Nakuru Day girls team revenged and defeated Menengai girls by 5 wickets in the girls final also played at the same venue. Ruth Keiro scored a quick fire 21 to achieve the set target of 54 even after Laura Adhiambo had picked three wickets. Daniella Talong had scored 20 for Menengai. Joan Njeri from St. Joseph was voted the best player of the tournament.
St. Joseph was third in the boys with the girls team also being third.

The following were also voted best players:
1. Best Batter (B) –Hamisi Juma (Nakuru)

5. Fielder –Marvin Shimenga (Menengai)

Kisumu are Woolmatt Champs

Kisumu apparently walked away with the 2009 RVCA Woolmatt Cricket League after a thorough demolition of Rift Valley Sports Club in the final played last Saturday.

Batting first, Kisumu made 274 in their allotted 40 overs before bowling RVSC out for a mere 109.

More details to follow as they become available.

Self Governance - A masterplan for a domestic competition

Happy Madaraka Day. On this anniversary of internal self rule, I thought it would be appropriate to post on something that has been ticking away in the back of my mind for some time now.

Kenyan cricket is at a cross roads. We continue to do well at a senior One Day level, but have not been so successful at either junior level, or at multi day cricket at the senior level. It is not rocket science as to why. For a cricket player to improve, they need to play regularly against decent opposition. Currently, Kenya has no domestic structure that allows for our top players at any age level to play each other enough. The NPCA leagues are the best in the country, but our best players are split between three divisions and the format is only limited overs.

Cricket Kenya have said since they got in that they will address this, but I am sure that I am not alone in wondering when it will actually happen. There was a national tournament mooted for late last year/early this year, but rains and the WCL scuppered that plan. So far, there seems to be no news on when it will happen, and this is a major worry.

Looking at the situation in Kenyan cricket, I have come up with my own idea on how things could be addressed, but first there are a few facts that need to be established:
  1. Cricket in Kenya is currently played almost exclusively on Sundays.
  2. Due to weather and Christmas, there are two windows in the year when cricket can be played: June to November and January to early March. A total of 8 months.
  3. The core of cricket in Kenya is the regional tournaments run by NPCA, CCA and RVCA.
My idea will involve the selected teams playing games on Saturdays as well as Sundays. If any multi-day cricket is ever going to happen in Kenya, this has to start happening and because of this, the financial implications in terms of sponsorship cannot be ignored. Basically, many current players work on that day and will need to be reimbursed if they are to play cricket instead.

Because of the importance of the current club structure, my model would try to leave as much of the June-November window free for club cricket as possible. This is after all the grass roots of the game and must be protected.
Assuming 4 weekends in January and February are available and 2 in March, some inroads to November and possibly October would be needed for a national competition.

Though the aim of this model is to introduce multi-day cricket to the players, it also aims to give the top players practice against each other at both One Day and 20-20 level as well. Thus a league system would be set up with each team playing the others in the following:
1 x 2-day game (Sat & Sun)
1 x 50-overs (One Day) game (Sun)
1x 20-20 game. (Sat afternoon)
Host teams would alternate on a yearly basis with a team hosting the 2-day game one year and the one-day and 20-20 the next.

To achieve this, the following time frames would be needed:

# of teams weeks req start end
4 6 Jan Feb
5 8 Jan Feb
6 10 Jan March
7 12 Nov Feb
8 14 Nov March
9 16 Oct March
10 18 Sept March
To put the emphasis on the 2-day games I propose the following points system based on an amended version several existing scoring systems:

2-Day game:
1st innings lead: 6 points.
Outright win: 16 points.
Draw: 6 points each
Bonus batting points at 150, 200, 250 and 300 runs per innings (4 max per innings)
Bonus fielding points at: 3wkts, 6 wkts, 8 wkts and 10 wkts per innings (4 max per innings)
Total available points: 38

1 Day Game:
Outright win: 16 points
Bonus batting and fielding points as above.
Total points available: 24

20-20 game:
Outright win: 10 points
bonus batting points at: 125, 175, 225, 250 (max 4)
bonus bowling points at; 3, 6, 8, 10 wickets (max 4)
total points available: 18

These may well need to be re-jigged, but give a basic starting point.

TEAMS
In terms of which teams should be included, I have worked on both the current relative strengths of the regions, future potential, youth growth and regional promotion. I believe the following table gives the best guide to how such a competition should be set up:

# of teams NPCA CCA RVCA Western Ken U19 Uganda Tanzania
4 2 1 0.5 0.2 0.3 0 0
5 2 1 0.7 0.3 1 0 0
6 2 1 0.5 0.2 0.3 1 1
7 2 1 0.5 0.5 1 1 1
8 2 1 1 1 1 1 1
9 As above + 1 depending on where required, etc for more teams.

As of April 2007, RVCA considered themselves too weak to compete in such a competition. Realistically however, they are unlikely to be much worse than the CCA and if bolstered by U19 players, they would almost certainly hold their own. As yet, Western hardly exist, but there is immense potential that needs to be encouraged there.

Any of the top 3 options could be implemented immediately with the others being introduced as development in regions such as Western Kenya and Rift Valley start to produce more and better players. Note that the division of players in shared teams would be discretionary and left up to the selecting committee of such teams with guidelines on a minimum number of players from each area.

Note also that the current U19 team are almost all from the NPCA, so until other regions improved to contribute more players, this would in affect give NPCA 3 teams in the competition.

The inclusion of Uganda and Tanzania would obviously depend on their boards and their willingness to participate. Benefits of their inclusion would mean the tournament would be more appealing to sponsors and it would help raise the level of cricket in the region. The make up of the teams would be left up to the boards and, as they get stronger, there would be no reason why these could not be development teams rather than full squads - similar to the team Kenya sent to the Logan Cup. Uganda may well already be at this stage, Tanzania probably not quite yet.

SPONSORSHIP
This is the crux on which such a competition would rest.
I believe the best system would be for a major sponsor to cover the tournament as a whole and then each team be separately sponsored as a franchise. There would have to be a limit on professional players from overseas - I'd suggest 1 per squad, and there would have to be a salary cap. However, I believe it would be a good idea to allow, and indeed encourage, sponsors to spend as much as they wanted in developing the game in their feeder clubs/area.

Money from the event sponsor would need to be allocated to provide regular feed to the media. Ideally this would include full write ups and scorecards in print media as well as highlights packages on TV and radio. This would help grow the supporter base for each team and in time could be expanded to include some live coverage as well.

Sponsorship dollars would also be needed to carry out an aggressive marketing campaign using the top players from each team and incentives such as luck gate prizes and 'catch a six and win' promotions. Initially, fans (especially those who know little or nothing about cricket) will need to be 'bribed' to attend matches. Use of music and entertainment between over/wickets and innings also needs to be looked at, especially in the one day and 20-20 matches. With other spectator sports in the country really suffering, this is an ideal time to promote the game, but as I said, people will initially need other incentives than just the cricket . In time this will change as new people learn about and get hooked on the game and teams will begin to build solid fan bases. It is this goal that must be kept in mind.

The Associates are constantly whining about not getting matches against the top teams, but we also need to start with some decent self-governance. Here's hoping Cricket Kenya follows something along these lines and soon!
