Scarecrow and Swamibapa start 2010 with wins
Having lost 2 games last weekend - one to rain, the other to a funeral, action returned to the pitch yesterday in Nakuru with both Scarecrow and Swamibapa registering their first wins of 2010.
Scarecrow defeated Royal Cubs by 32 runs in the 14th match of the RVSC Crown Berger 20-20 League thanks to a superb unbeaten 90 from Armadeep (?) and a depleted Cubs side. Armadeep found good support in Faiz (?) who added 37 as Scarecrow eased to 182/3 in their 20 overs.
Royal Cubs hit an early hurdle with the loss of Krunal for just 3, but a good second wicket stand between Trushit ? (30) and Sunny ? (68) gave them a glimpse of victory before Prabdeep ? (3/29) ripped through the middle order. In the end the chase fell well short, but could have looked better had Royal Cubs been able to field a full team.
This begs the question as to what exactly the RVCA development program is doing as one would have thought that there would be plenty of local school boys who would be itching to make up the numbers. It is just such scenarios (and the spinknit forfeight last week) where the association needs to step in and give these younsters a chance. At worst, they would certainly allow a proper game to be played and at best could really make a name for themselves if they took the opportunity. This must be serious food for thought for RVCA for future matches. There is no point in having a development program if local players are not filtered into the league teams.
In Game 16, Swamibapa batted first against Khalsa XI but found the going difficult against the tight lines of Indraj ? (4/24) and Vikas (3/21). Top scorers were Kalpesh Patel (24) and Jogesh Patel (19) with Sunil Rathod (18) and Deval Patel (16) also contributing to the final tally of 120 all out.
If Swamibapa had struggled against the bowling, Khalsa really made a meal of it as their reply stuttered to just 94 all out. V.P Singh was the lone figure of resistance as he was left stranded on 36* as only two other players made it into double figures. Jogesh Patel (3/23) was pick of the Swamibapa bowling with Jignesh Patel (2/10), Dilp Patel (2/10) and Anil Patel (2/18) also enjoying their time with the ball.

Youngsters get the nod for IC and 20-20s
Cricket Kenya has today released the team for the upcoming Intercontinental cup clash with top-of-the-table Scotland and the 20-20 series with Scotland and Uganda that follows. While the batting line up is much to be expected, the selectors have opted to keep faith with three of the youngsters who played in the recent series vs Uganda. This means that at least one of Shem Obado, Nelson Odhiambo or James Otieno, maybe all, will get a full cap before the series is out. Strangely given the decision to go with the youth, there is no place for Lucas Oluoch who was perhaps the standout of the players that was blooded against Uganda.
There is also no place for the vastly experienced Peter Ongondo and with both Thomas Odoyo and Rageb Aga unavailable due to injury, this leaves Kenya with a very inexperienced front line attack. For the Intercontinental Cup only, Alfred Luseno is retained and will open the bowling with his extra pace with Elijah Otieno and Nehemiah Odhiambo the other likely seamers.
The top order batting line up retains the services of Seren Waters for the Intercontinental Cup, but he returns to university afterwards to make way for Tony Suji in the side – another strange selection given that the selectors are obviously choosing with one eye on the future. With Waters likely to open and Ouma (Cpt) and Steve Tikolo certainties, the other batting slots will be between David Obuya, Rakep Patel, Alex Obanda, Collins Obuya, and Shem Obado. The spin department must surely be lead by Hiren Varaiya while Jimmy Kamande will retain his place as Vice Captain.
The 20-20 series will likely be where the youngsters get their chances as coach Eldine Baptiste will need to do some tinkering before the team heads off for the World Cup qualifiers. All three should get a run at some stage, but may lose out if Suji is included.
This squad gives several younger players a real chance to step up and prove themselves, but the lack of experience could be costly, especially in the longer format where a player such as Ongondo would have been valuable both with the ball in hand but also as a steadying influence on the less experienced players. Elijah Otieno and Luseno will really need to bend their backs to get the early breakthrough to avoid the pressure building up. Kenyan fans will be hoping it is a gamble that pays off – it is about time Kenya started to put together a string of wins.

Maurice Ouma is the 2009 Kenyacricket.com Player of the Year
This year Kenya cricket.com reintroduced the Player of the Year award bringing in a much larger panel of judges to select Kenya's most consistent high achiever over the last 12 months.
There are 2 panels (Players & Journalists) plus a Fan poll. Each panel has 5 judges on it.
How the panels work is that after each International match, each panelist awards 3 points to the player they think performed the best, 2 points to the next best performer and 1 point for the 3rd best performer for Kenya in that match.
Fan points are allocated the same way, but based on an online poll.
After each game, the total points for each panel are tallied and the highest points total for that panel gets awarded 3 points, the second highest 2 points and the 3rd highest 1 point. These are referred to as Aggeragate Points.
The total aggeragate points from each panel plus the fan poll (3,2,1 as well) are then totalled and again the highest scoring player is awarded 3 points, the next highest 2 and the third highest 1 point for the match - known as Match Points.
By using this system, at the end of each game 3 players come out with Match Points that then go towards the end of year tally. The player with the most points at the end of the year in the Player of the Year.
Using the several levels of tallying helps remove personal bias and rewards the best and most deserving players for that match.
Please note that not all panelists were available for all matches, but we have strived to adhere to this system as much as possible.
This year, possibly because of the extra panelists, it has been the closest ever decision. In the end only 1.5 points split the top 4 performers with new captain, Maurice Ouma (pictured v Ireland in the Intercontinental Cup), narrowly edging out Steve Tikolo and Jimmy Kamande to take the award. Past winners include Steve Tikolo (2006) and Thomas Odoyo (2007). There was no award in 2008.
Congratulations to Maurice on being chosen as Kenya Cricket.com Player of the Year 2009 and to all the players who made this such a close competition.
As Maurice sits on the players panel, I thought it would be a good idea to go back and see what the result would have been if his points were not included. Had this happened, he would actually have won by a clearer margin of 2 points rather than 0.5!
My thanks to all the panelists for 2009 - I hope we can count on your input again in 2010 and to thanks also to all the fans who voted online. Hopefully we will have a much more streamlined process for this next year.
